12 injured, including several children, in Tallahassee, Florida, shot

Twelve people, including several juveniles, were injured in a shooting near Florida A&M University’s Bragg Memorial Stadium, where homecoming celebrations included a football game Saturday.

The Tallahassee Police Department said in a statement that 11 of the 12 people were shot and three victims were seriously injured, including a juvenile in serious condition. The others, it is specified, were in stable condition.

Six of the injured are under the age of 18 and the youngest is 11, Chief Lawrence Revell of the Tallahassee Police Department said during a news conference early Sunday morning.

“Our preliminary information shows that an altercation occurred between individuals,” he added, calling it “an isolated incident between two or three individuals.”

Revell said no arrests have yet been made or anyone taken into custody, but police believe a shooter was involved.

“Our priority is to determine what happened and why it happened, and to bring those responsible to justice,” he added, asking all witnesses to come forward.

The violence took place around 8 p.m. at an intersection adjacent to Bragg Memorial Stadium, according to the release. Early in the evening, the Florida A&M Rattlers hosted the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions for the annual homecoming game of this historically black university.

After the shooting, the university released a statement on X asking members of its campus community to stay away from the area.

He described the shooting as taking place “near campus,” which he said was safe.

“Our hearts go out to the victims and everyone affected by this evening’s incident on Perry Street,” the university said.

Florida State University, located about a mile from Florida A&M, issued an emergency alert about the violence and said it did not appear anyone in its school community was involved.

“As a precaution, students, faculty and staff in the Tallahassee area are advised to stay indoors this evening and remain vigilant,” the statement said.

Revell offered his condolences to the victims and their families, and also praised the police officers who he said rushed without hesitation “into the middle of all this, still not knowing where the shooters were, still not knowing how many victims we had.”

“We had officers picking up victims and carrying them in their arms to transport them because they couldn’t get through the mass of people,” he said.

The investigation into the violence was ongoing and police asked for witnesses to come forward.
