New polls reveal how Democrats rode the blue wave to victory

Three days after Election Day, the focus now shifts squarely to two Senate elections — in Mississippi and Alaska — that have yet to be projected. The results will determine whether Democrats reach a staggering 56-seat majority in the Senate.
We’re also awaiting final results from more than 20 House races. Democrats secured their largest majority in nearly two decades, but aim to make even more history if they approach the 260-seat mark.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump just announced a shake-up at the White House, appoint Stephen Miller as chief of staff.
Keep up to date with all the latest headlines here:
In Mississippi: Democratic candidate Scott Colom holds a narrow lead over Republican incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith. The Democrat said today that Hyde-Smith “doesn’t have” a path to victory and urged her to speak out. CNN Sightline views the Senate race as neutral, with the contest too close to call. Colom foreshadowed his approach as a senator if he wins election, telling CNN that he is “100 percent” willing to work with Trump and Republicans if elected.
As for Alaska: Because of its size and remote location – and the fact that there is a very high percentage of military voters who cast absentee ballots – the count is expected to take several days. “This is completely normal in Alaska,” elections expert David Becker told CNN.
DOJ officials resign: John Eisenberg, who headed the Justice Department’s National Security Division, announced his resignation today, marking the third senior department official to resign since the election.
Hegseth Backlash: The GOP backlash is also hitting the Pentagon, where staff rallied behind embattled Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth before a meeting yesterday. impeachment fight expected.
What’s next for the Republican Party? A historic election cycle for Democrats has implications for the future of the Republican Party, including its prospects for 2028, its top donor Elon Musk and the oversight and legal review expected from new Democratic leadership.
Ukrainian leader optimistic: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told CNN he hoped for increased bipartisan support from the United States after the Democratic Party took control of both chambers.
Global markets react: The AI-driven sell-off in stocks, which wiped about $2.5 trillion in market value from Wall Street, has eased, but only after hitting Asian and European markets hard. Sharp swings in AI stocks this week underscored uncertainty over how the U.S. midterm results will impact the AI trade.
