Four people were killed and about 15 others injured after multiple overnight shootings in one of Dallas’ bustling nightlife areas, police said.
The incidents occurred at three separate locations, all in the city’s Deep Ellum neighborhood, east of downtown.
Police have not found a connection between the incidents but say they continue to investigate whether they are related, Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said at a news conference Sunday morning.
The total number of injured is “still moving a bit,” according to Comeaux, with some self-transporting to receive medical treatment.
The first shooting occurred around 12:20 a.m., while the second occurred shortly after 1 a.m. and the third shooting in the series occurred about a half-hour later, according to a Dallas police news release, citing the preliminary investigation.
Several people have been arrested and are being questioned as police work to identify the potential shooters, he said, although their possible connection to the shootings is unclear.
The department has increased staffing in anticipation of Halloween crowds, the chief said. “We had more of a presence here, and that was something we were prepared for,” Comeaux said.
No officers were injured, police said.
The three incidents appear to have occurred about a half-mile apart, on streets full of local restaurants, art galleries, bars and concert venues.
The neighborhood bills itself as “Dallas’ premier arts and entertainment district,” according to its website. Several area venues had announced Halloween events for that night.
It’s unclear whether the shootings took place inside a business or on the street, Comeaux said.
He praised the department’s “incredible” response time, adding that one officer was able to save the life of an injured person.
The identities of the victims and the conditions of the injured were not released Sunday morning as Dallas police continue to investigate the incidents.
The department is asking the public for photos and videos from the area as it works to piece together what happened, Comeaux said during the news conference.
“We are going to do everything we need to do to detain everyone responsible,” he added.
The nighttime incidents came about six months after two late-night shootings within a block of each other in Deep Ellum left a 26-year-old security guard dead and five others injured, according to CNN affiliate KTVT.
CNN has contacted Dallas police for more information.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
