Brock Purdy has had a phenomenal start to the season. Although he hasn’t played flawless football, the 49ers quarterback has clearly taken his game to another level and, after playing a key role in a thrilling road win over the Seattle Seahawks, now leads the MVP race.
Although recent matchups with the Denver Broncos and Seahawks have presented Purdy with more problems than he’s faced in the first three weeks, Purdy has been a picture of consistency through five games and has the chance to make a historic run when the 49ers host the Washington Commanders on Monday Night Football to close out Week 6.
Purdy has multiple touchdowns and a passer rating of at least 90 in his five games so far this season.
If he continues this trend against Washington, he will become the only player in NFL history in his first five career seasons to record multiple touchdown passes and a passer rating of 90 or higher in his team’s first six games of the season.
Against a Washington defense that ranks 23rd in EPA per play and 25th in EPA per play, the signs point to another profitable game for Purdy.
One concern for San Francisco is the injuries that continue to plague the wide receiver position, with Deebo Samuel set to miss his reunion with the Commanders with a hamstring injury.
However, with Mike Evans in incredibly effective form and tight end George Kittle hopefully free of the illness he battled in Seattle, the hope will be that the 49ers’ weaponry will be more than enough for Purdy to capture this piece of history and, more importantly, help secure San Francisco’s sixth straight victory.
