BETHANIA, okay. —
A Southern Nazarene University football player who was seriously injured during a game last weekend has died, university officials said.
SNU President Keith Newman shared a message announcing the passing of Tyler Ulrich, a sophomore defensive back from Azle, Texas. Ulrich was injured in the Crimson Storm’s loss to Ouachita Baptist on Saturday and taken to the hospital in critical condition.
“Earlier today, Tyler Ulrich, a beloved member of our SNU football team and student body, passed away,” Newman said in the release. “Tyler suffered a traumatic injury during last Saturday’s football game. Since then, he has been in the hospital, continually surrounded by the love, prayers and presence of his family, teammates and dear friends.”
SNU’s game against SWOSU was scheduled for Saturday, but was canceled following Ulrich’s death.

A GoFundMe has been set up to support Ulrich’s family. Those wishing to donate can do so by clicking here.

An SNU play-by-play announcer said it quickly became very serious. He said the player was on the ground after the play, but he could not say the cause of the injury.
He called it one of the most horrific and heartbreaking scenes he had ever seen around a game.
Details about the injury or what happened leading up to it have not been released.

As our students, faculty, and staff gathered Tuesday for our campus-wide prayer chapel, we anchored our hearts in the truths of Psalm 62, remembering that “my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. Truly, He is my rock and my salvation; He is my refuge, I will never be shaken. » In this moment of deep sorrow, we lean on this rock and this source of comfort.
Please keep Tyler’s family, teammates, coaches and friends in your continued prayers during this incredibly difficult time. Our Renew Counseling Center and campus pastors are available to our campus community who need help navigating this grief.
May the peace and comfort of God be with us all.
