Carney returns to Alberta to make last-minute plea for unity

CALGARY, Alberta — Prime Minister Marc Carney is back in the province he calls home, pleading for unity days before Albertans decide whether to take a step towards separation from Canada.

Monday’s vote is a referendum on whether to hold a referendum: He asks Albertans if they should begin the process for a future vote on leaving Canada. Polls show most want to stay, but pro-unity organizers fear confidence will keep them away from the polls.

Canada’s Prime Minister spends the final days before the vote trying to get “remain” supporters to the polls.

“At this pivotal moment, Albertans have a choice: build a stronger Alberta and a bigger Canada to leave to our children. Or burden them with years of deep division and uncertainty,” Carney said a gathering of more than 5,500 supporters waving Maple Leaf flags in Calgary on Thursday evening.
