About a third of the way through “You Can See Everything,” Nathan Fielder’s new documentary about Elizabeth Holmes, we watch the disgraced Theranos founder and convicted fraudster pose for the camera — more than 200 of them, to be exact.
In the days leading up to her arrival in a federal prison in 2023, Holmes had her portrait captured and digitized so that it could be reproduced by video, hologram and artificial intelligence while she is locked up. It’s partly a business decision: She and her partner William “Billy” Evans, with whom she shares two children, are launching a new healthcare startup (which they call Theranos 2.0), and it might be useful to have access to a version of Holmes that can be programmed, for example, to give pitches. And yet, we see Holmes crying. She’s already been hurt by spreading her image too far to the public. “I have a strange history with being filmed,” she said, sobbing.
Thanks to “You Can See Everything,” this story only gets weirder.
The pre-release buzz around this new film, made in secret and revealed via a surprise trailer released last month, has been almost deafening. Some critics who knew its secrets boldly declared it “the film of the year” or wondered whether it might even become the first documentary to receive a Best Picture Oscar nomination. With the film releasing in theaters across the United States on Friday, audiences now have their turn to see what all the fuss is about.
Fielder’s film is completely unique and revolutionary. Thanks to the unprecedented access to Holmes and his family in the days leading up to his incarceration (at one point we even see Evans showering naked), as well as some truly stunning creative decisions later in the film, the film is gripping and shocking. It’s a daring, perhaps impossible, quest for the truth about someone Fielder likens to a magician. At one point, he wonders if maybe she’s the most manipulative person who ever lived.
Rarely, if ever, have a documentary filmmaker and his subject been so perfectly suited. Through his shows “Nathan for You” and “The Rehearsal,” Fielder established himself as someone pathologically obsessed with elaborate schemes, awkwardness, meta-narratives and things that are not what they first seem. In these shows, Fielder plays both the straight man and the agent of chaos, often appearing as an alien disguised as a human sent to study our most inexplicable behavior, even if that means getting involved in things himself.
If Fielder plays another version of himself here, Holmes seems to offer almost infinite versions of se to examine, like a set of still reflections in a funhouse hall of mirrors. As the film progresses, Fielder and the audience are left to wonder if and how they were deceived. Is Holmes just weird, as her partner Evans insists? Victim of the men in her life, as her father seems to believe? Someone who might be on the spectrum and unable to understand how others perceive his words, as a revealing sequence involving Holmes’ reaction to Abbott and Costello’s “Who’s On First” sketch seems to suggest? Or is she just a compulsive liar who managed to deceive herself?
