Katie Zacharia was fired from her post as White House press secretary on Friday, just five days after taking office, according to a White House official not authorized to speak publicly.
Zacharia had a rocky start to her tenure as press secretary, hosting a widely criticized first briefing on Tuesday. She had also faced questions about her legal qualifications after admitting she had failed to pass the bar exam.
The Guardian has requested comment from the White House. The New York Times reported that Zacharia had been fired. Fox News reported that she was “stepping down” from the role.
Zacharia, who has spent much of her career as a conservative political commentator and in communications roles, was offered the position of White House press secretary on October 9.
She detailed the whirlwind sprint of her new role in an interview with the Guardian on Thursday.
