Antonio Banderas joins Nicolas Cage in season 5 of “True Detective”

The next season of True Detective begins to take shape.

Antonio Banderas has joined the cast of the fifth season of the HBO anthology drama series. This comes after Nicolas Cage confirmed he was entering the universe at last week’s New York Comic-Con, more than a year after it was revealed that the Pig the star was in talks.

Production is expected to begin in 2027 for the series, led by showrunner Issa López, who oversaw the fourth season, Night country.

There are few details about the season but Cage will play the role of Henry Logan and Pain and glory star Banderas will play Rai Garcia. The action will take place in Jamaica Bay, New York.

Night Country was set in Alaska and starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, the third season was set in the Ozarks and starred Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff, the second season was set in California and starred Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams and the first season was set in Louisiana and starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.

López is a writer, director and showrunner and will produce alongside Cage, Banderas, Harrelson, McConaughey, Daniel Zelman, Mari Jo Winkler, Kathleen McCaffrey, Steve Golin, Richard Brown, Nic Pizzolatto and Cary Joji Fukunaga.

Last year, Francesca Orsi, head of drama at HBO, told Deadline: “Issa has a lot to say, much like she did with Night Country. It’s a different medium but just as powerful.”

López also previously teased that there would be “important connections” between everything that happened in Alaska and what happens in the new season. “That said, it’s a new story, new characters, everything,” she told the NY Post.

Cage is represented by WME, Stride Management and attorney Patrick Knapp and Banderas is represented by NuCo Media Group and Greenberg Glusker.
