New York’s Plaza Hotel to close in 2027 for 4 years of renovations

New York’s historic Plaza Hotel will close its doors in January 2027 for at least four years while it undergoes major restoration work on its protected facade, according to its operator, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts. The hotel is expected to remain closed until 2031 if the cleanup is completed in time, although a reopening date has not yet been announced.

The closure will affect the hotel’s 282 rooms, event spaces and Palm Court restaurant, which are also expected to close in January, according to The New York Times. The property also houses 181 condominium units, although it remains unclear whether the restoration will affect residents.

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts declined to comment.

Opened in 1907, the Plaza sits on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Central Park South, overlooking Central Park. Designed by architect Henry Janeway Hardenbergh, the 18-story building features French Renaissance style architecture. The hotel was designated a New York City landmark in 1969.

The Plaza has also become a recognizable site in films and on television. Titles that were filmed or set in the hotel include Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), in which Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin McCallister stays at the hotel, as well as North by northwest (1959), The way we were (1973) and Eloise at the Plaza (2003), among others.

President Donald Trump also owned the Plaza from 1988 to 1995. Trump made an appearance in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.

The upcoming closure marks another major interruption in the Plaza’s history. The hotel closed in 2005 for a renovation that transformed many of its original rooms into private residences before reopening in 2008.
