The fifth season of True Detective threw out his tracks.
Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas will star in the next season of the HBO anthology, which is expected to begin filming in 2027. Both stars are rumored to have been attached to the series for some time: Cage was first reportedly in talks for a starring role in the summer of 2025, and there is speculation that Banderas will join True Detective first appeared late last year.
Cage all but confirmed the role during an appearance at New York Comic Con last week: “Because you can only do so many movies back to back to act, and necessity is the mother of invention, you can connect those dots as well,” he said. “What do I mean by necessity? Feeding the family and not doing too many movies back to back. So I think I’ll probably do another season of television. I think I might do a season of A real detective. It’s only natural that I’m the first to announce it, right?
HBO (newly under the Skydance umbrella after the Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger closed) is keeping story details under lock and key for now, but it has proposed character names for both stars: Cage will play Henry Logan and Banderas will play Rai Garcia.
HBO has picked up a fifth season of True Detective in February 2024, shortly after the fourth season of the series — subtitled Night Country – concluded with good ratings and more critical praise than the anthology’s previous two seasons. Night Country Showrunner Issa López will serve in the same role in season five (in addition to writing and directing). López executive produces with Daniel Zelman, Mari Jo Winkler, Kathleen McCaffrey, Cage, Banderas, Steve Golin, Richard Brown, series creator Nic Pizzolatto, first season director Cary Joji Fukunaga and first season stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey.
Cage leaves Black Spider on Prime Video and will next be seen in Mad (also on Prime), as NFL coach, commentator and video game innovator John Madden. He is repped by WME, Stride Management and attorney Patrick Knapp.
Banderas’ recent credits include the Anthony Bourdain biopic Tony, Little girl And Against himpremiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. He is repped by NuCo Media Group and Greenberg Glusker.
