Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s Son Maddox Becomes Their Second Child to Legally Drop Pitt from Last Name

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s son Maddox has legally dropped Pitt from his last name.

A judge in Los Angeles County Superior Court ruled on Monday, Sept. 14, that the 25-year-old’s name would legally be changed from Maddox Chivan Jolie-Pitt to Maddox Chivan Jolie, according to public court records reviewed by PEOPLE.

Maddox first filed to request the legal name change on May 28.

A representative for Pitt, 62, declined to comment at the time of the filing when reached by PEOPLE.

Maddox is the eldest of Jolie, 51, and Pitt’s six children. The former couple, who split in 2016, also share Pax, 22, Zahara, 21, Shiloh, 20, and 18-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne.

In August 2024, Shiloh, born Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, legally changed her name to Shiloh Jolie. Shiloh filed to change her surname on May 27, 2024, which was also the then-teen’s 18th birthday.

Several other siblings have distanced themselves from Pitt via their last name. In May 2024 Playbill for The Outsidersthe Broadway musical Vivienne helped her mom produce, Vivienne was credited as Vivienne Jolie rather than Vivienne Jolie-Pitt. In July, Vivienne filed a petition to drop Pitt from her last name, citing “personal” reasons, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE at the time. A hearing on her petition is scheduled for Nov. 2.

Zahara also dropped her father’s last name when she walked across the stage at her graduation from the college on May 17, 2026. While the new grad, who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, was listed as Zahara Marley Jolie-Pitt on the commencement program, her name was read as “Zahara Marley Jolie” as she walked across the stage. Zahara officially filed to drop Pitt from her last name in June, just days after Maddox’s filing, per docs obtained by PEOPLE. Her hearing is set for Sept. 28.

Maddox also previously identified himself as “Maddox Jolie” in February, when he dropped Pitt from his last name in the credits of his mom’s latest movie, Couture.

He served as an assistant director on the drama, which starred Angelina as an American film director diagnosed with breast cancer just as she arrived in France to make a video for Paris Fashion Week.

“This is the result of a prolonged campaign of alienation of children against their parents,” a source close to Pitt, 62, told PEOPLE in July. “It’s an incredibly sad reality, but it’s not surprising after years of one parent weaponizing the children against the other one with no regard for the consequence.”

A Jolie insider also told PEOPLE in July, “If people knew the whole truth, they would have more sympathy for the children and respect them. The fact they aren’t speaking ill or sharing things publicly only shows their decency.”

Maddox’s legal name change comes exactly 10 years after an incident between Pitt and Jolie on a private plane ride.

Sources previously confirmed that on Sept. 14, 2016, Pitt allegedly got “verbally abusive” and “physical” with one of his kids on the couple’s private plane while their other kids were present. While Pitt was under investigation on suspicion of child abuse, the FBI later cleared the F1 star, while the LA County Department of Children and Family Services concluded its investigation with no findings of abuse.

Jolie filed for divorce five days later. Their divorce was finalized in December 2024.

“There has never been any real understanding of what happened that caused her to file for divorce, or the years that followed,” a Jolie source previously told PEOPLE on Monday. “For a decade she has kept silent, so not to disparage the father of her children. She has kept a dignified silence even while she was being attacked with misinformation.”

A source close to Pitt adds that “there’s very little communication right now” between Pitt and his children. “It’s a tragedy.”
