Jagex, the developers behind RuneScape, Old-School RuneScapeAnd RuneScape: Dragonwildsannounced that it was canceling the RuneScape Relaunched project. “Clearly we missed the mark on this, and so we are not moving forward,” Mod Ryan said in a video announcing the cancellation.
RuneScape Relaunched was announced earlier this month during Runefest 2026, a community event dedicated to all things RuneScape. The project was supposed to be a refresh of the 25-year-old MMO, giving players the chance to start the game over with a completely new economy, reboots of early world hits, and tailor-made worlds designed specifically for Reactivated accounts. Reactivated players would exist in the same world as veteran players, able to chat, form guilds, and share player housing, but unable to trade or party to defeat bosses.
And while the announcement excited some world-weary inactive players and current veterans, other players were less than thrilled. The players felt that Reactivated would focus attention on new players at the expense of long-time veterans, and that fixing the current issues that still plague the game would be more helpful in the quest for player attraction and retention than simply wiping the slate clean. It seems, with this announcement, that Jagex has taken these criticisms to heart. “We received a ton of different perspectives from you, and we really appreciate everyone sharing their perspective,” Mod Ryan said. “Our goal is to see RuneScape grow again, with players returning and new players joining, but Never to the detriment of our existing community.
