After this horrific accident involving a Tesla driver who reported he was sleeping and using the driver assist mode, the California Highway Patrol warns that “Despite its name, fully autonomous driving is not fully autonomous. The technology does not relieve drivers of their responsibility to operate their vehicle safely.”
Video released by CHP shows the Tesla speeding past flares, cones and emergency lights where officers were at the scene of a previous crash, before crashing into the back of a parked patrol vehicle. The CHP says two officers were seriously injured in the crash and taken to the hospital.
Tesla released an update to Autopilot in 2023, adding more controls and alerts to encourage drivers to take full control of the car when Autosteer is activated, but NHTSA later had to open another investigation to determine whether those changes went far enough.
