Meghan Markle’s choice to wear minimalist jewelry ‘sends a powerful message’

  • When Meghan Markle stepped out with her husband, Prince Harry, for their first joint appearance in the UK since returning, she wore minimal jewelry.
  • The Duchess of Sussex chose not to even wear her engagement ring, which surprised some.
  • “Sometimes the strongest statement in jewelry is knowing when not to make one,” says Nilesh Rakholia, jewelry expert and founder of Abelini. In style.

When she visited Nottingham, England, on Oct. 15 alongside her husband, Prince Harry, Meghan Markle’s jewelry — or lack thereof — sent “a powerful message,” according to a jewelry expert.

Nilesh Rakholia, founder of Abelini, tells In style that the Duchess of Sussex’s minimal jewelry “struck me right away.”

“With her hair swept back, her ears and neckline are completely bare, and for someone who has access to an extraordinary jewelry collection, it’s a striking choice,” he says. “When you can wear anything, what you decide to leave in the box says a lot.”

Rakholia says “the little jewelry she wears” was the “first thing I noticed.” Thursday’s appearance marked Harry and Meghan’s first joint outing in the UK since returning to Britain at the end of August, and Rakholia said: “For such a significant return to public life in Britain, you would expect a statement necklace or a pair of diamond earrings. She took the opposite route, and it seems very deliberate.”

Meghan wore a pair of understated earrings from Joseph, along with her Welsh gold wedding ring and Princess Diana’s Cartier watch. She left behind her engagement ring, as well as a necklace of some kind. The As Ever founder wore her hair pulled back, so “any large earring would have been the first thing you saw, so leaving them out is a real decision,” Rakholia says. “She doesn’t rely on diamonds to make her outfit stand out.”

Meghan wore head-to-toe British designers for the outing: a wool and cashmere coat from Joseph, as well as a turtleneck and earrings from the brand; she paired these items with a slit pencil skirt from The Fold London cinched at the waist with a Marks and Spencer leather belt. She completed the look with Jennifer Chamandi pumps and carried a Joseph woven leather bag. She also wore a gold ring other than her wedding ring and a Logan Hollowell Oura ring clutch.

Meghan’s decision to wear only British designer clothes “is a very well considered and intelligent decision”, said former royal butler Grant Harrold. In style on behalf of the OLBG. “She’s very thoughtful when it comes to her clothes, and this is a perfect example of how she sends clear messages without saying a word.”

Rakholia says Meghan’s style represents “a confident way to wear jewelry. When an occasion needs to be so closely guarded, the temptation is to add something special. Meghan did the opposite and let the burgundy, cut and silhouette do the work.”

“To me, it shows that what you choose not to wear can say as much as what you do,” he adds. “The look seems thoughtful because she resisted the urge to add more.”

Rakholia says: “Whether that was her intention or not, it sends a powerful message,” adding: “There is a real difference between dressing to impress an audience and dressing to interact with them. »

“To me, the most interesting thing about Meghan’s jewelry today is what she chose to leave out,” Rakholia says. “Sometimes the strongest statement when it comes to jewelry is knowing when not to make one.”

A source said People from Harry and Meghan: “After arriving in England, they focused on establishing a routine and getting the children settled into school. Now, they are both excited to focus more on their work and the projects that matter to them.”
