A four-hour documentary about Elon Musk continues to encounter resistance from social media platforms, with TikTok banning the film’s advertising account.
According to an article from The Hollywood Reporter, the documentary’s distributor, Bleecker Street, was recently informed by TikTok that its account had been placed on a “permanent suspension” due to its political content. TechCrunch has contacted TikTok for comment.
Ads promoting the “Musk” trailer – directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney – were also initially rejected by Meta and YouTube, although those platforms ultimately allowed the ad, with Meta attributing the rejection to “an error.” Gibney recently confirmed that the film’s international distributor, Universal, had wavered in its plans to release “Musk,” although it was now moving forward.
X, which Musk owns, refused to run ads for “Musk.” TikTok’s US operations are partly owned by Larry Ellison – who, like Musk, has been a notable supporter of President Donald Trump.
“Musk” was released in just four theaters last weekend and is now rolling out more widely. Next year, it’s supposed to air on HBO – now part of Paramount/Skydance and run by Ellison’s son, David.
