Quentin Tarantino has long announced that he will retire after his tenth feature film, but fans shouldn’t worry just yet. Although the “Pulp Fiction” director confirmed that he has finished writing the script for his final project, he won’t go much further until his new play, “The Popinjay Cavalier,” wraps.
Tarantino made the statement during a recent episode of “The Graham Norton Show,” where he joined the host alongside fellow guests Ellen DeGeneres, Colin Farrell and Gemma Chan. It was his first appearance on the show in over a decade.
“I wrote a script that I really love, but I want to do the play and see who I am; then I’ll go back and spend time with my family and live a little and then see what I want to do,” Tarantino said.
He also gave the audience a better look at “The Popinjay Cavalier,” which he said began as a screenplay before the director realized “it really worked as a play.” “I think it will be exciting,” he said.
Starring Sacha Baron Cohen, “The Popinjay Cavalier” will premiere at London’s Phoenix Theater next March, following previews in late February. The play, described as a “gripping comedy”, is expected to run for three months and concludes on June 13. “I can’t wait to give the West End a great night,” Tarantino said in a statement when the show was announced.
Tarantino’s most recent release remains “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” released in 2019 and starring Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie, Margaret Qualley and more. Pitt won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor that year, as did Barbara Ling and Nancy Haigh for Best Set Design. Tarantino was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Director, while DiCaprio was nominated for Best Actor.
