Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film on hold

Taika Waititi’s “Star Wars” film, in development since 2020, is officially on hold, the director confirmed while promoting his latest film “Klara and the Sun.”

“I hate to break it to you, but we’re going to put it aside and we’re working on something different together,” Waititi told Inverse while discussing “Star Wars.” His publicist reportedly told him not to say more during the conversation. “Well, here’s your answer,” Waititi said. “I don’t even know how to dress it up or make it vague.” “It’s very frozen. I have about four other films that I’m trying to make,” he continued. “The ice ages are coming to an end… Who knows?

In January, the director said he was “trying to go back and mine a little more of the fun of the original films, which is what I remember.”

“The stakes are very high, and there are serious things happening, but there’s also a lot of fun to be had in these films. That’s what I was trying to bring back,” Waititi continued. “I was trying to work in a world that was a little bit separate from this one because there was so much going on in that space. For me to do something there, it would have to be a little bit different and a little cleaner.”

Previously, Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy said Waititi’s “Star Wars” was “still somewhat alive.”

So far, Waititi’s latest film, “Klara and the Sun,” has been met with a mixed response from critics and fans. Variety’Guy Lodge of Guy Lodge wrote in his review that “Jenna Ortega strives to enlighten this misbegotten Kazuo Ishiguro adaptation, but Waititi’s decision to cast her for tense, whimsical comedy is ruinous.”
