Reviews: What do critics think of other cities in the Broadway desert?

A new cover of Jon Robin Baitz’s Tony-winner Other Desert Cities opens at the Hudson Theater on October 18, after beginning previews on September 29. With a star-studded cast including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Ed Harris, Allison Janney, Joe Keery and Lily Rabe, the production has already been one of Broadway’s biggest grossers, performing The $2 Million Club in its first full week of previews. John Benjamin Hickey is at the helm, with a limited engagement that will continue until January 17, 2027.

11-time Emmy winner Louis-Dreyfus makes her Broadway debut as Polly Wyeth, alongside Harris as Lyman Wyeth, Academy Award winner Janney as Silda Grauman, Keery (Stranger Things) as Trip Wyeth and Rabe as Brooke Wyeth. Understudies Japhet Balaban, Tony Carlin, Amanda Drinkall and Kathryn Meisle round out the company. Casting is done by Jim Carnahan.

The play, which premiered Off-Broadway via Lincoln Center Theater in 2011 before transferring to Broadway that same year, centers on a writer from a family with opposing political views who threatens to publish a tell-all memoir revealing a long-held family secret. The work was a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
