5 people found dead from gunshot wounds in home in Mundelein, Illinois

Five people were found dead with gunshot wounds in a house in Mundelein, in the northern suburbs of Chicago, overnight from Sunday to Monday.

On Sunday at 11:45 p.m., Mundelein police were called to a wellness check at a home in the 200 block of Wellington Avenue.

Inside, police found three men and two women dead. All five suffered what appeared to be gunshot wounds, police said.

The five adults were either family members or a couple, police said.

Two handguns were found at the scene.

Mundelein police were investigating Monday morning with the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force. Police said the incident appears to be isolated and there is no threat to the public.

CBS News Chicago was on scene when investigators carried three bodies out on stretchers around 7 a.m. Each was covered with a black sheet.

The bodies were transported and placed in a black van.

Some time later, investigators were seen trying to break into a Volkswagen registered in Illinois. The vehicle was in the parking lot of a funeral home adjacent to the red house.

The car was wrapped in crime scene tape, as it had been all morning. The car’s relevance to the death investigation was unclear.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office said it appeared all of the victims died from their gunshot wounds.

The names of the dead had not been released as of Monday noon.

Neighbors said a retired couple who ran a veterinary clinic lived in the house. They said the family was silent.

A neighbor who did not wish to be named fears one of the victims may be the owner of the house.

“She greeted people. She was friendly,” the neighbor said. “I have a cat that comes out and runs around while I garden, and she always talked to me about my cat. She knew cats. She loved cats.”

Police have not revealed a motive or who could have pulled the trigger and killed those in the home.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Mundelein police at 847-968-4600.
