Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is expected to miss the remainder of the season after additional tests revealed blood clots had traveled from his leg to his lungs, the team announced Monday.
Hurts’ condition is considered stable and “he has no significant functional limitations,” the team said. His treatment for a new diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary embolism will involve anticoagulants, during which time he will not be able to participate in contact activities.
The 28-year-old’s prognosis is good and the Eagles said they expect a full recovery with no long-term effects.
English specialists initially diagnosed superficial clots in Hurts’ left calf after Philadelphia’s loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in London on October 11. Further testing revealed several blood clots in his lungs.
“We anticipate that he will have the opportunity to return to contact football activities when he is no longer taking blood thinners,” the team’s statement concluded. “In the meantime, he “will remain active with the team and continue to condition. More importantly, we expect it to have no long-term effects.”
Hurts had not missed more than two games in a season since becoming the Eagles’ full-time starter in 2021. He led the Eagles to five straight playoff appearances, three NFC East titles and two Super Bowl appearances, beating the Chiefs 40-22 two years ago.
Tanner McKee started for Hurts against the Panthers. McKee finished 26 of 45 for 215 yards and a touchdown in the Eagles’ 25-14 loss to Carolina. The Eagles (2-4) have lost four straight games for the first time since 2020.
Hurts has eight touchdown passes and three interceptions with 933 passing yards this season. He’s in the middle of a five-year, $255 million extension, including $179.3 million guaranteed, that will take him through the 2028 season.
The Eagles stunned fans when they drafted Hurts out of Oklahoma in the second round in 2020. They apparently had Carson Wentz cut at QB and had more pressing needs. But Hurts has supplanted Wentz and become one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.
