If you’ve noticed that Selena Gomez’s voice has changed lately, apparently you’re not losing your mind. In a video posted to her Instagram Story on Sunday evening, the 34-year-old responded to her fans’ claims that her voice had become raspier and shifted to a lower register. Sorry to disappoint you, but the culprit wasn’t his clone, it was his vape.

“I vaped nicotine a lot,” Gomez said. “Nicotine is so hard to quit, and I think I just wanted to say that if you’re suffering from it or if you’re even trying to vape, it’s not worth it. It’s so stupid and it’s changed my voice.”

“If you don’t like listening to my voice, that’s completely understandable,” she laughed. “I don’t mind, but don’t listen.”

The singer went on to explain that she had a “very difficult time” kicking her nicotine addiction. She didn’t fully explain how she was able to quit these highly addictive devices, but she did say how “excited” she was to be done with them (for now, at least). “I just hope we can continue like this,” she said. “But I know if you go through something, you can get through it too. It sucks.”
