Miley Cyrus returned to the stage for a two-night performance at the Hollywood Bowl, but her return got mired in chaos when she poured her energy into responding to fan criticism. She was bothered by criticism that she did not sing enough, that she was not dedicated to the fan experience, and that she viewed performances as an experience. “I’ve never heard that I don’t put my heart into something,” she said in a video shared on But she did it. She went on to clarify that “this isn’t an experience on your part, it’s an experience on me – you all make the experience possible.”
Even though she’s a household name, Cyrus hasn’t done a full show like this since 2022 and hasn’t been on tour since 2014. The Hollywood Bowl tour included some interesting choices: On both nights of the show, Cyrus brought out her fiancé, Maxx Morando, to help her perform “Let’s Get Married”; performed two songs with Flaming Lips lead singer Wayne Coyne; and sang a tribute to her godmother, Dolly Parton. But she wasn’t just focused on performance. During her second performance of “Bass Persuades,” Cyrus said, “Oh, I forgot I’m supposed to sing every damn line!” » Perhaps it was no surprise when she admitted that performing on stage was strange for her. “I appreciate each of you reaching out and touching me and being able to feel you. But I want to say it means a lot to me,” she said on the first night, according to the Los Angeles. Times. “It’s a little overwhelming.”
The public criticism was so damaging that Cyrus considered not performing the second show. “Before I came out for (the first song) ‘Orbit,’ I was already telling myself I’m not going to go on stage, I’m going to run away,” she told the crowd. “But I’ll never let you sit in these seats and not be satisfied with a performance. So I can take a lot of that, but one thing I won’t put up with is knowing where my heart is when I’m on stage. I’m fully present.” Is she preparing to be fully present in an even bigger room? What about, say, the Super Bowl?
