North Carolina Democrats voted twice as many as Republicans

State of play: Trump’s declining approval ratings should spur Democrats to vote, while potentially having the opposite effect on Republicans.

  • Democrats are betting on North Carolina as one of four seats that will allow them to take control of the Senate and thwart Trump’s agenda for the remainder of his presidency.
  • And they’re hoping the enthusiasm around U.S. Senate candidate and former Gov. Roy Cooper could help them vote against North Carolina’s election.

In figures: Nearly 143,000 more ballots were cast statewide through Oct. 18 compared to the same time during the last midterm election.

  • Mecklenburg County voted with 58,714, trailing Wake County with 73,586.

Among those statewide ballots, registered Democrats expressed twice as many as Republicans, 240,206 to 102,845.

  • 46% came from registered Democrats and 35% came from unaffiliated voters.
  • Republicans made up 20%.
  • By this time in 2022, the GOP share was closer to 30%.

Yes, and: Women outnumber men, representing 52% of the total votes cast.

  • And nearly 8% of registered Black voters turned out to vote, compared to about 5% at the same time in 2022.
  • This exceeds the turnout rate of white registered voters, which is 7% (6% in 2022).
