US sanctions five Chinese entities for stealing trade secrets from former Google engineer

THE US Department of State announced Monday that it was imposing drastic sanctions under the United States Intellectual Property Protection Act (PAIPA) on five Chinese entities suspected of stealing trade secrets from American companies.
Targets include Shanghai Zhisuan Technology, founded by former Google software engineer Ding Linwei, venture capital firm MiraclePlus and three related entities.

Ding was convicted of seven counts of theft of trade secrets in January. A federal judge later acquitted him of seven additional counts of economic espionage, finding insufficient evidence that he knew or intended at the time of the flights that his conduct would benefit the Chinese government. Theft convictions remain in force.
