Dan Quinn on viral clip: ‘I definitely knew it was fourth down’

The first half of Monday night’s game featured a fourth-and-2 miss from the San Francisco 13’s commanders. After the pass to the end zone was incomplete and the Commanders were called for an illegal change, ESPN cameras captured Commanders coach Dan Quinn seemingly surprised to learn he was fourth down.

When he met with reporters nearly an hour after the game ended, Quinn was ready to answer the question about the viral lip-reading moment.

“I definitely knew it was fourth down,” Quinn said. “We were going there, and I was – I think what you’re referring to, I was probably saying, like, with the illegal change, there’s no penalty for a field goal. Like, it’s not going, like, it’s the turn for downs. Like, I think someone asked me, ‘Can we score a field goal?’ So now we were going for it. We knew we had to go for fourth downs to be bold in the game. I didn’t think it was would be a 17-14 game. I probably thought it would take 28, 30 to score, you know, to win and so it was intentional that we were going to go there, but I think I was probably saying that I remember, at least in the headset, someone asking me, after an illegal change, like it was a turnover on downs, and (quarterback) Jayden. (Daniels) saw the foul too. He also came out and saw the penalty.

You can watch the clip and come to your own conclusion. Again he seemed surprised, revealing no facts. And he clearly had his story ready when he arrived for his press conference – with plenty of time after the game to write it up.

Obviously, after what happened last week, Quinn couldn’t allow himself to admit that he didn’t know he was fourth. Even if he didn’t know he was fourth.
