Earlier this month, AMD senior vice president Jack Huynh told South Korean media that FSR 4 would be available on more devices, including handhelds – and that promise has now been fulfilled.
Huynh announced today that FSR 4.1 will come to five new platforms: Radeon RX 6000 series graphics cards; Gorgon Halo and Strix Halo mini PCs and mobile workstations; Gorgon Halo and Strix Halo Ryzen 9 laptops; Z2 Extreme and Z2A handhelds like ROG Xbox Ally devices; and Xbox Series X and Series S.
It’s a nice surprise to see AMD’s latest generation upscaler on a huge range of additional devices – although modders in the community have been working hard to port the technique to an even longer list of supported platforms.
FSR 4, formerly known as Project Redstone, is AMD’s first machine learning upscaler and offers a significant visual advantage over its previous efforts at similar frame rates – hence the interest in making it available on a wider range of PCs, handhelds and other devices. In addition to upscaling and antialiasing, the technology also includes frame generation and ray reconstruction, giving it better feature parity with Nvidia’s similar DLSS technology.
Huynh’s announcement also says that FSR is coming to Vulkan, a graphics API that is the default choice for games that don’t use (or want to offer an alternative to) DirectX 12. FSR 3 and earlier supported Vulkan, so it’s good to see this limitation addressed – although it’s unclear how quickly developers will be able to add FSR 4.1 support to their Vulkan games.
More APUs will get FSR 4.1 support in the future, Huynh claimed, and the announcement video also mentions that AMD’s next-gen FSR Diamond will be supported on Xbox’s Project Helix “family of devices.”
If you want to use FSR 4.1 on your PC (officially) for the first time, you will need to install Adrenalin Edition version 26.10.1. The graphics drivers also add support for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Star Wars: Galactic Racer, and Final Fantasy Resonance.
