East Michael a musical with dramatic elements – or a drama with musical elements? One of the lingering questions about awards season has been answered.
Michael submitted to the upcoming Golden Globe Awards as a musical/comedy, but the entry was rejected by the awards committee, Gold Derby has exclusively learned. Although the Globes generally respect studio preference, the committee found that the film did not meet the criteria of the rules stating that “a musical may be a comedy or drama in which songs are used in addition to spoken dialogue to advance the plot.” According to sources, the members felt that the musical performances in Michael did not meet this criterion of driving the story.
Lionsgate, the studio behind Michaeldebate whether to appeal the decision before the October 31 submission deadline; if an appeal is successful it will be assessed by the awards committee. Obsession And Tender loving care have already been submitted and accepted as comedies.
Unless Lionsgate appeals and wins, the film and its actors — especially its star, Jaafar Jackson, who has the best chance of an acting nomination — will have to compete in the most competitive drama categories. Supporting actors — like Colman Domingo — aren’t segregated by gender at the Globes.
After Radius And Follow the line won as musicals, the Golden Globes rules were changed, requiring music to drive the film’s narrative; that music alone was not enough to qualify a given film as a musical. In the years that followed, musical biopics like A complete stranger, ElvisAnd Bohemian Rhapsody all presented in the form of dramas.
Golden Globes producer Dick Clark Productions is owned by Penske Media Eldridge, a joint venture between Eldridge and Penske Media Corporation, owner of Gold Derby.
