Rain is forecast in Southern California and flooding is a concern

Rain is expected in Southern California Wednesday through Thursday as the National Weather Service warned of potential risks at beaches and thunderstorms from Oxnard to the Mexican border.

The Los Angeles-Oxnard Weather Service office estimates there is a 30 to 40 percent chance of thunderstorms, with concerns of minor flooding and widespread debris flows in Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

However, most areas will likely experience only minor impacts from these weather conditions, the bureau said.

The area most at risk of flooding is the Santa Monica Mountains, according to a weather service spokesperson.

“Some of the most vulnerable areas include first-year burn scars,” a spokesperson said.

The Palisades and Altadena areas are among those recently hit by wildfires.

As for rain amounts, the Los Angeles Weather Service expects 1.73 inches of rain in Thousand Oaks Wednesday through Thursday, with Oxnard at 1.53 inches, Santa Clarita at 1.47 inches, LAX at 1.31 inches, Covina at 1.29 inches and Long Beach at just under an inch.

On LA County and Oxnard area beaches, waves of 3 to 6 feet are expected through Thursday evening on south and southwest facing beaches.

Tides are expected to range from 5.5 to 6.2 feet.

The San Diego Weather Service office, which monitors Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside and San Diego counties, issued a beach hazard warning Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.

The opinion, in effect until 11 p.m.warns of dangerous rip currents and breaking waves, with waves 3 to 6 feet. The highest waves are expected on south and southwest facing beaches, according to the NWS San Diego.

The agency warns that rip currents can sweep swimmers and surfers out to sea, while waves can sweep people off beaches and rocks and capsize small boats near shore.

The weather service advises swimmers to “stay out of the water to avoid dangerous swimming conditions.”
