Firefighters say it happened shortly after 9:30 p.m. and we monitored the situation throughout the night. The evacuation is still in effect, but only within the one mile radius of the HAZMAT incident.

The EPA is on site and has identified the chemical as a resident of the adhesive coating. This chemical is not considered highly toxic, but it may cause irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system.

A shelter-in-place has been set up within a three-mile radius of 1050 Progress Ave. Residents in this area are asked to keep their windows and doors closed and turn off all ventilation systems that bring in outside air.

The chemical leaked from a tank at the Sterling Pipe & Tube plant on Progress Ave.
