President Donald Trump said early Wednesday morning that large data centers should produce their own electricity and provide financial benefits to the communities where they are built.
“I have mandated new, large data centers, in some cases gigantic, to produce their own electricity,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social article.
“As President of the United States, I have observed data centers very closely and have come to a very strong conclusion. New and large data centers, in some cases gigantic, are mandated by me to generate their own electricity and give or resell any excess to the local community, or to the grid, and therefore there is an increase in the price of electricity. In fact, there could be a substantial decrease. Other things too! If companies want to make their data centers popular, pay the community and/or individuals within the community a ‘dividend.’ I watched the process closely, and data centers that were very unpopular in a certain area became extremely popular when a financial deal was reached. MAKE BUSINESS and get it built!!! IDEAL FOR THE DJT President OF THE UNITED STATES”
He said facilities would have to sell or return excess electricity to local communities or the power grid, which could potentially lower electricity prices.
Trump also urged tech companies to offer residents a “dividend” to bolster their support for data center projects, which face opposition because of their substantial demands for electricity and water.
“DO BUSINESS and GET IT BUILT!!! GREAT FOR THE UNITED STATES,” Trump wrote.
The president said the administration’s policy is aimed at preventing consumers from absorbing the cost of powering the AI industry.
These comments follow similar proposals from Anthropic and Elon Musk to distribute a portion of the financial gains from artificial intelligence to the public.
