Presidential 2027. Raphaël Glucksmann-Olivier Faure: the real duel of the socialist primary

Can Raphaël Glucksmann lose the Social Democratic primary? While the second debate this Thursday evening between the five candidates is presented as crucial, his duel with Olivier Faure will be scrutinized. The leader of Place publique (PP) is in fact considered the big favorite of this primary open to all

and enjoys a better rating than the first secretary of the Socialist Party (PS) in all the polls where they are tested together.

The first debate organized on LCI did not benefit Olivier Faure. The latter, challenger, did not particularly stand out, leaving the spotlight to Emmanuel Maurel, co-leader of the small GRS party (Republican and Socialist Left) and Jérôme Guedj (PS deputy for Essonne). But the latter two, like Ségolène Royal, do not seem able to upset the Glucksmann-Faure duel, barring a huge surprise.

The debate this Thursday, one week before the electronic vote scheduled for October 9 and 10, could therefore be decisive. Broadcast on France 2 and France Inter, it should reach a much larger audience than the exchanges scheduled on the news channels. Raphaël Glucksmann and Olivier Faure will have to differentiate themselves by their proposals on the merits and not only on their relationship to La France insoumise (LFI) by Jean-Luc Mélenchon who hosted the end of the first televised debate on LCI. “These debates are talking time and they must be useful to the left. We must be able to excite people by what we wear and not by the little sentences of one or the other,” insists a supporter of Raphaël Glucksmann.

Left redial

In the campaign for several weeks, the two men want to rebuild the left, to provide it with a dynamic capable of countering the useful vote currently captured by LFI. But for the moment, neither Glucksmann nor Faure have put forward innovative proposals, likely to spark a substantive debate and put the left back at the center of the political game.

Their positioning on the chessboard is significantly different. Olivier Faure, who is also thinking about future legislative elections, aims to bring together the entire left outside the LFI, with no possible bridge with the macronie. Raphaël Glucksmann intends to rebuild the left, by capturing some of Emmanuel Macron’s voters. A difference which could be important in the carryover of votes from the second round. If there is one.

Activists from the organizing parties can vote (free) or any French person registered on the electoral roll who registers before October 5 on chose2027.fr (15 euros, 10 euros for the social rate).
