OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (KCTV) – Health officials have confirmed a norovirus outbreak at Bentwood Elementary School after approximately 85 cases were reported over the past week.
The Johnson County Department of Health and Environment said two cases were confirmed through laboratory testing.
Health officials noted that the remaining cases are considered epidemiologically linked, meaning people had similar symptoms at the same time and in the same environment.
JCDHE added that it is working with school officials to monitor the disease and help prevent further spread.

Norovirus is very contagious and causes vomiting and diarrhea. Health experts say it spreads easily in schools where students and staff are in close contact.
To prevent transmission, officials recommend frequent hand washing with soap and water, thorough cleaning and disinfection of contaminated surfaces, and staying home when sick.
Health officials have urged anyone infected with norovirus to stay home for at least 48 hours after symptoms disappear.
In a letter to families Monday, school officials said absenteeism rates were high early last week with similar symptoms, prompting coordination with the JCDHE. Since then, absenteeism rates have decreased considerably.
School leaders said the building received additional sanitation over the weekend. The school is cleaned and disinfected daily with hospital grade products effective against norovirus, with additional cleaning of frequently touched surfaces.
The JCDHE added that it would continue to monitor the situation and provide advice if necessary.
Bentwood Elementary School is located in Overland Park, but it is part of the Olathe School District.
