SACRAMENTO, California. —

Thousands of California state workers walk out Wednesday in a historic one-day strike.

The May Lee State Office Complex in Sacramento is one of several sites where state workers will strike.

The SEIU Local 1000 union is leading the strike, fighting the state for a new contract. The union is demanding a 20% wage increase over three years, as well as reduced health care costs and changes to telework policies.

Workers are also expected to gather in downtown Sacramento at noon. Employees considered essential are exempt from the walkout.

The SEIU last authorized a strike in 2016, but did not call a statewide strike.

The union represents about 100,000 civil servants across 140 state departments and agencies, including cooks, custodians, nurses and clerical staff.
