Detroit Lions TE Sam LaPorta expresses frustrations over contract situation

A few weeks ago, reports surfaced that the Detroit Lions and tight end Sam LaPorta had cut off contract extension talks after the negotiations were no longer productive. A few days later, LaPorta spoke to the media and confirmed that the two sides were at an impasse. During this media session, he took the high road, noting that he feels respected in the building and wants to be optimistic about reaching a deal.

“I think the combination of twisting your heart and the violent sport that we play — it sucks,” LaPorta said. “It’s disappointing that you go there every week and you run the risk of getting injured. Like last year, whatever it was, Week 9, Week 10, I’m breaking my back for this team. And then I go there this year, and I’m playing, and maybe they’re just not showing the love.”

We haven’t heard the Lions’ perspective on why the contract issues ran into an issue, but general manager Brad Holmes and coach Dan Campbell have expressed great public appreciation for what LaPorta is doing and have also made it clear they want him long term.

“There’s always going to be two sides, and you work on these things, and just because there’s a report on it doesn’t mean it’s a big deal, a big deal,” Campbell said two weeks ago. “I love LaPorta. We love LaPorta. He’s a heck of a football player, and I thought he played his best game the other day. His work ethic, his production speaks for itself.”

It is unclear whether the two sides will resume negotiations during the season, or if they will settle during the offseason. Regardless, LaPorta is letting his agent handle that, while remaining focused on the current NFL season. That said, it seems like he’s already comfortable if things don’t work out in Detroit.

“So I’m going to continue to do my thing and get by, and in three months if I can’t wear the Honolulu Blue and play for the Lions, I’ll be fine. I’ll go get paid somewhere else. So whatever,” LaPorta said.

The entire interview is definitely worth your time. LaPorta talks Dan Campbell’s mindset and the culture shock of an aggressive offense after playing at Iowa. We also talk about Jahmyr Gibbs’ block, how his back feels, playing on Thanksgiving and submitting his name for the Italian Olympic flag football team.
