iOS 27.2 launches next week, and the update includes code that points to an upcoming change in the Messages app: the ability to exclude muted conversations from unread badge counts.
Apple is working on a feature to exclude disabled message conversations from the number of unread badges

Do you belong to a very active group chat? Or are there people in your life that you prefer to keep muted in the Messages app?
If either or both are true, it might bother you that muting these conversations doesn’t impact the Messages app’s unread badge count.
Except that soon, according to the iOS 27.2 code, this could finally change.
Aaron Perris shared the discovery this week in an article on X:
Personally, I’m very excited about this potential change.
I keep a few busy group chats muted in Messages so I don’t constantly get notifications. And as someone who keeps notification badges disabled for most apps, a red badge is still very noticeable. So it always bothers me when Messages has an unread badge for group chats that I’ve disabled.
Although it seems that this feature is not available in iOS 27.2, we hope that Apple can offer it soon.
Would you use this Messages option if Apple offered it? Let us know in the comments.
