Juvenile with handgun arrested at Bell Gardens High School, police say

BELL GARDENS, Calif. (KABC) — A juvenile allegedly in possession of a handgun was arrested Wednesday morning at Bell Gardens High School, according to police.

The Bell Gardens Police Department said they received a 911 call about a juvenile with a handgun on the Agra Street campus.

Officers went to the school, took the juvenile into custody and recovered a handgun, according to police.

Bystander video shows a police officer taking a juvenile into custody at Bell Gardens High School after police responded to a report of a gun on campus.

A video posted to social media by a witness shows a man in plain clothes, possibly a school security guard, standing over the suspect, who is lying face down on the sidewalk in a courtyard. Officers arrive in a patrol vehicle moments later and one of the officers handcuffs the suspect, who is then placed in the back seat of the police car.

Authorities conducted a search of the school, with SWAT officers on scene. The campus was temporarily placed on lockdown before the green light was given. The students were released at the Joboneria Road/Watcher Street gate.

The AIR7 video shows a law enforcement presence at the school, in addition to what appear to be groups of students outside.

The department stressed that no active shooters were reported and no shootings took place. No injuries were reported.

The K-12 system is normally handled by Montebello Unified School Police, but Bell Gardens Police assist with critical incidents.
