“Kevlar suit”: the editorial staff of 39 media outlets condemn Mr. Le Pen’s remarks against Mediapart

“We, journalists working in editorial offices with different editorial lines, denounce together and without reservation the death threats made by the National Rally against our colleagues at Mediapart and the numerous attacks by the extreme right against journalists throughout the country.

By suggesting to Mediapart that they put on their “Kevlar suit” (a bulletproof vest, therefore), Marine Le Pen puts a target on the backs of journalists.

These violent attempts at intimidation are the hallmark of authoritarian regimes around the world and are particularly worrying for the right to information to which the population of a democratic country can claim.

Freedom of the press, guaranteed by the European Convention on Human Rights and international law, makes journalism an essential counter-power. That politicians aspiring to govern the country could act in this way is alarming.

Journalists investigate supporting evidence, report facts, explain, analyze and thwart well-oiled communication campaigns, in compliance with ethical rules, whatever the sensitivity of their media. Under no circumstances should they be intimidated for doing their job.
