Dillon Danis provides update on Conor McGregor after his injury-ending return: ‘He was in a dark place’

Conor McGregor’s long-awaited return was marred by a devastating injury just seconds into his fight at UFC 329, but according to one of his closest friends, ‘The Notorious’ is more determined than ever to return to action.

Dillon Danis, who has counted McGregor as a friend and training partner for several years, has provided an update on the Irish superstar as he continues to recover after undergoing ACL reconstruction surgery on his knee. Although the conclusion to his fight with Max Holloway was understandably upsetting, Danis promises that if anyone can get through this and bounce back, it’s the former two-division UFC champion.

“Obviously after the fight you could only imagine how someone would feel coming back after five years and it was happening that fast,” Danis told Mike Heck of MMA Fighting. “He was in a dark place. Any human being will. I’m not going into detail about what we talked about because it’s obviously personal, but as a human, how would you feel? The greatest comeback and it happens.

“Now his head is a lot better. He has a nurse with him 24/7. He’s doing all the exercises. He’s isolated in Los Angeles to do everything he needs to do for his knee and he’s focused on getting back. There’s something about Conor that (when) he thinks about something, he does it. No one will tell him he’s not fighting anymore, you’ll never be the same, all the bullshit everyone said, when this guy has his head on something, it’s blinders”

With one fight remaining on his current contract with the UFC, McGregor has already stated several times that he is preparing his return with the hopes of competing again as soon as International Fight Week in 2027, which usually takes place in July.

Obviously nothing has been offered or booked, but Danis has full confidence that McGregor is doing everything possible to make this return.

“He’s fossused right now,” Danis said. “I talk to him almost every day and he’s in a good place right now and I’m happy to see him.”
