Aesthetically at least, the second-generation Chevrolet Camaro always felt like it deserved more muscle car respect than it got. In my eyes, it remains the gnarliest. The first generation is certainly a classic, but much more sober, while the boxy side of the 80s had taken hold by the time the third generation was released. The second-generation Camaro has that typical Ford Torino snout and is visually muscular. For those who agree, there is currently a very nice example for sale that ticks all the right boxes.
Spotted on Hemmings Classified, a 1970 Chevrolet Camaro equipped with a Vortech supercharged Chevy 396 V8 and a Tremec five-speed manual transmission said to balance engagement and “more practical highway use.” It’s finished in the brightest red paint and looks as mean as it is clean. Staggered 15-inch American Racing wheels wear heavy-duty 275-section Mickey Thompson rubber in the rear and Cooper Cobras up front. It’s being sold in Bridgeport, Connecticut by Red Line Restorations, has 90,000 miles on the odometer and the asking price is $77,000.
BAD indeed
The full parts list is long, but highlights include an Aeromotive fuel system with an upgraded fuel tank/cell, flex-a-lite aluminum radiator with dual electric fans, CalTracs traction components with new lower control arms, bushings, steering box and shocks, and a MagnaFlow dual exhaust with X-pipe. Other hardware includes an Edelbrock intake, Edelbrock throttle body, HVC ignition coil, braided fuel lines, CalTracs-style assist hardware for the leaf springs, and oil and radiator catch cans.
Chevrolet no longer makes the Camaro, but in the new muscle car land, $77,000 can buy you a new Ford Mustang Dark Horse Premium with a few grand left over for options – and that’s about where your modern comps end. As good and cool as this Dark Horse is, it arguably doesn’t touch this ’70 Camaro in terms of sheer street presence. And if you’re still not convinced, take a look at the “BADSS” vanity plaque he’s wearing. They don’t hand them out to just anyone, you know?
