David Krumholtz explains why he missed the 10 things I hate about you reunion during Julia Stiles’ tribute to Heath Ledger on Dancing with the stars Tuesday evening.
In a video posted to Instagram on Wednesday, the actor explained that he was currently in the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York filming a movie.
“I couldn’t stay in Los Angeles for Dancing with the stars last night. I would have loved, I would have loved to have been there,” he said. “Everyone looked so amazing. Julia’s tribute to my dear friend, who I miss every day, was incredible and breathtaking, and I am so proud of her.
“I thought the actors were superb. They all still look so young,” Krumholtz added before taking off his hat to show off his new bald head. He joked that “it would have been weird” to join his former co-stars in the ballroom after shaving “what’s left of my hair” because it would have become “fodder for the Internet.”
“I didn’t want that, but that’s not why I wasn’t there. I would have dealt with it. Either way, love them all, love each other,” he concluded.
During the last DWTS In this episode, Stiles and his professional partner Ezra Sosa dedicated their dance to Ledger, who starred alongside Stiles in the beloved 1999 romantic comedy. He died in 2008 at the age of 28 following an accidental overdose.
The couple danced to Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” which was the song Ledger’s Patrick Verona serenaded Stiles’ Kat Stratford with at her high school football practice. In the scene, he runs and dances through the stands while the marching band plays to try to convince her after Joey Donner (Andrew Keegan) pays him to eliminate Kat.
After Stiles and Sosa’s emotional dance, which featured some of Ledger’s signature moves, the poem his character reads in the film about Patrick begins to play in the ballroom. After the actress places a flower on the ground in Ledger’s honor, she is joined by her castmates. 10 things I hate about you co-stars including Keegan, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Cameron James), Larisa Oleynik (Bianca Stratford), Gabrielle Union (Chastity) and Susan May Pratt (Mandella).
10 things I hate about youDirected by Gil Junger, follows teenager Joey who wants to date Bianca, but she can’t date until her antisocial older sister, Kat, has a boyfriend, per her father’s strict rules. That’s when Joey pays a mysterious boy, Patrick, to ask Kat out on a date. In the film, Krumholtz plays Michael Eckman, a friend of new student Cameron who also has a crush on Bianca.
