A teacher who was injured in the Bend, Oregon, school shooting said she tried to close a classroom door before pretending to be dead, hoping the shooter wouldn’t target her again.
Becky Drury made the remarks in a statement released to media Wednesday, as the Bend Police Department confirmed that the firearm used in the attack at Silver Rail Elementary School, which left three children and a teacher dead, was “legally purchased.”
“Here’s what I remember: Once I realized something was happening outside, I ran to see what was happening. I then saw the shooter and immediately ran towards the classroom. I turned around to close the door behind me, but the shooter was already there. Before I could do anything more, he shot me at point blank range and I fell to the ground,” Drury said.
“Lying on the ground, I saw that my left hand was almost completely severed by the gunshot, and my other arm was also seriously injured. I could not get up, defend myself or anyone else,” she added. “So I did the only thing I could do, which was pretend to be dead in the hopes that he wouldn’t shoot me again.”
