Huckabee expresses doubts about viability of Peace Council plans

United States Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee wonders if the Peace Council can keep its promises to the president that of Donald Trump peace plan for Gaza without more planning and resources from the U.S. government, according to a cable the embassy sent to State Department leaders on Thursday and obtained by POLITICO.

The cable, which has not been previously reported, was signed by Huckabee and expressed concern that neither the organization nor the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem has the necessary personnel to advance plans to disarm and rebuild the Palestinian enclave.

Huckabee’s The questions focus on whether the main coordination center between the United States, Israel and international partners – the International Gaza Support Center – will be able to maintain operations after the Pentagon reduces its staff as planned over the next year, according to the cable. The current plan is for civilians to take over these jobs, the cable notes.

“The Jerusalem embassy does not currently have the staff necessary to take on these roles, but it can be if it has an idea of the human, financial and logistical resources that will be required,” he wrote. “The BoP is working to increase its staffing levels, but its ability to cover all IGSC functions remains uncertain.”
