ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. — A Georgia man has been convicted of crimes related to infecting his wife and two other women with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) without telling them he had the disease.

Prosecutors say his wife died from complications related to HIV.

Prosecutors dropped charges of intentional murder and felony murder, and Cleveland J. Broadie pleaded guilty to reckless driving charges, according to Rockdale County court records.

A warrant for Broadie’s arrest was issued in 2023 in connection with the death of his wife Denise in 2022.

Court records show Broadie was charged with reckless driving as an HIV-infected person for having repeated sexual intercourse with his wife without informing her of his diagnosis.

The warrant said he was diagnosed and given medication for the illness as early as 2006. In 2022, Denise Broadie was diagnosed with HIV and days later died.

Additional reckless driving charges were filed for his sexual activities with two other victims after his wife’s death. Prosecutors say he didn’t tell either of his HIV diagnosis.

A Rockdale County indictment showed a grand jury found that Broadie maliciously caused his wife’s death by infecting her with HIV during unprotected sex and without informing her of his illness, due to the reckless conduct he was accused of involving unprotected sex.

Broadie was accused of intentionally trying to infect the other women he had sex with, although the court record does not indicate whether those efforts were successful.

In court, transcripts show the prosecution presented evidence that Broadie knowingly infected a woman in 2009 with HIV, an act the prosecution said he admitted to, saying he and the woman “decided to stay together because they were both HIV positive.”

Prosecutors also said Broadie continued to have unprotected sex in the home where he lived with his wife while she was hospitalized and dying, according to court transcripts.

Prosecutors mentioned several other victims with whom he had sex, but to none of whom he disclosed his HIV status.

On October 7, Broadie attended a plea hearing.

During the plea hearing, the prosecution said that at no time did Broadie inform the various medical facilities treating his wife for serious illnesses that he was HIV positive.

“They did not know that she had been previously exposed to it, nor that her husband had a current diagnosis,” the prosecution said. “Medical providers at both facilities had conversations with this defendant and it was never brought up.”

Finally, Denise Broadie tested positive for HIV on March 28, 2022.

The prosecution said it was too late to save her.

“At this point, she had gone too far, Your Honor,” the prosecution said, according to court transcripts. “And she finally succumbed to death from large-scale AIDS on April 2, 2022.”

Broadie negotiated a guilty plea to the three reckless driving charges and, in exchange, the prosecution agreed not to pursue murder charges for the death of his wife, Denise.

He was sentenced to 15 years in prison, eight of which must be served in custody. Broadie received credit for time served and will be eligible for probation at the end of the eight years.
