Lula says he will win “in overtime” despite an “unexpected” result in the first round

Left behind by his conservative rival Flavio Bolsonaro in the first round of the presidential election in Brazil, outgoing left-wing President Lula admitted on Sunday that this result was “unexpected”, but said he was confident of winning “in overtime”.

“The match is going to start. We are in overtime, and that’s where we are going to convince the Brazilian people,” said Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, 80, during a speech in Sao Paulo shortly after the end of the count.

Flavio Bolsonaro in the lead in all regions except the Northeast

The candidate from the conservative camp wins in all regions of Brazil, except in the Northeast where Lula’s PT remains dominant. In the Southeast, which includes the states of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Flavio Bolsonaro is ahead of Lula by more than 10 points.

After counting almost 99% of the ballot boxes, the son of the ex-far-right head of state Jair Bolsonaro, aged 45, obtained more than 47% of the votes, compared to 45% for left-wing veteran Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, 80 years old.

After counting more than 97% of the ballots, Flavio Bolsonaro received 47.39% of the votes against 44.74% for Lula.

The gap is closing

In the State of Sao Paulo, the Bolsonarist camp is well in the lead

The outgoing governor of the state of Sao Paulo, Tarcisio de Freitas, former minister of Jair Bolsonaro, is in the process of being re-elected at the head of the richest and most populous state in Brazil with more than 63% of the votes (76% of votes counted) against Fernando Haddad, former minister of the economy in the Lula government until January 2026.

Flavio Bolsonaro in the lead after the count of 64% of the votes

According to the site of the Superior Electoral Court, after the counting of more than 64% of the votes, Flavio Bolsonaro has a large lead over Lula. With 49.58% of the votes, the senator from Rio currently distances himself from the outgoing president who garners 42.25%.

However, the progress of the counting is not as advanced in the South East and North East as in other regions of Brazil. These two regions are the two most populated in the country. “Nordeste” has been Lula’s electoral stronghold for four decades.

Candidates prepare for a speech

According to Brazilian media, Lula left his home to go to a hotel in downtown Sao Paulo from where he is expected to speak in the evening. Flavio Bolsanaro should speak to him from Rio de Janeiro.

Polling stations closed, what will happen now?

Polling stations closed across the country at 5 p.m. Brasilia time. The counting can now begin and it is quite rapid in Brazil due to electronic voting.

In fact, Brazilians did not slip a paper ballot into a ballot box. Since 2000, they have had to type six codes of two to five digits on voting day on an electronic ballot box to elect the president, the governor of their state, two senators, a federal deputy and a regional deputy.

It is the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE), an organ of the Supreme Court, which centralizes the counting resulting from electronic voting feedback. You can follow the counting in real time on this site.
