Rep. Ilhan Omar Clarifies Full Name After Federal Raid, Pseudonym Allegation

Rep. Ilhan Omar briefly answered questions about her name while sharing more about the federal search of her Washington, DC, home.

Questions about the name Omar

Omar was scheduled to speak at a news conference at the Hennepin County Election Office, but she did not show up for the event. She voted there, and Omar said she did not speak to federal investigators after they searched her Washington, DC, home.

Local perspective:

Sources close to the investigation told Fox News they filed court documents under a different name because they believed “Ilhan Omar” was an alias. When FOX 9 asked Omar to clarify her real name, she replied, “My name is Ilhan Abdullahi Omar. »

FOX 9 also found his elementary school photo from Edison High School in Minneapolis. The directory listed the 17-year-old as “Ilhan Omar.”

On October 12, President Donald Trump’s Justice Department raided Omar’s home in Washington, DC. Trump has suggested the investigation could lead to his expulsion, and Omar has denied the allegations.

New details on Omar’s housing search

In her October 21 interview with MS Now, Omar said she plans to leave home due to ongoing death threats and security concerns now that her address is public. According to the Wall Street Journal, investigators seized his phone and evidence boxes as part of an attempt to strip him of his citizenship and deport him, while immigration experts told the Journal the government faces a high bar for proving fraud in court.

What they say:

Omar said the search began early in the morning of October 12 and his first thought was that “something was on fire.” “Well, you don’t show up at someone else’s house that early in the morning, unless you’re trying to scare them,” Omar said. “And obviously that freaked us all out.”

Omar said her husband opened the door and officers showed a search warrant after she asked to see one. She said as many as 25 officers searched for about four to five hours and took away 17 items she called “bizarre,” including several phones, notebooks belonging to her husband, a camera and a children’s book in the Somali language.

What we don’t know:

Omar said she still doesn’t understand why the search took so long when the warrant was largely for electronic devices. “I don’t think anyone understands what’s going on yet. I mean, it doesn’t make sense that they would raid a house to take my phone…” Omar said. “So coming so early to pick up my phone seemed obnoxious to me. It still seems obnoxious.”

Fox News previously reported that agents seized Omar’s passport and investigators obtained his DNA as part of the federal investigation. During the October 21 interview, Omar denied that officers collected DNA during the search of his home.
