A 23-year-old woman and her baby were pushed from a New York apartment balcony on Tuesday, leaving the woman dead and the baby in critical condition, law enforcement sources told NBC News.
An NYPD spokesperson said the incident happened early Tuesday morning at 2550 Olinville Avenue in the Bronx.
The spokesperson said that when they arrived, the woman and baby had “injuries indicative of a fall from an elevated position.”
The mother, who police have not identified, and her baby were taken to a nearby hospital. The 23-year-old young woman died from her injuries while her baby – aged less than a year and a girl, according to police sources – remains in critical condition.
There have been no arrests at this time, according to the spokesperson, and the investigation continues.
Police sources say the mother was holding the baby in her arms when they were pushed from the balcony. NBC New York reports that police are reviewing video of a person wearing a hoodie leaving the area shortly after the crime. The person seen leaving the scene would be the one who pushed the two men, according to police sources.
However, NYPD detectives are looking to question the 23-year-old woman’s ex-boyfriend, according to police sources. The sources did not name the man they are looking for. They did not make a connection between the ex-boyfriend and the person who left the scene wearing a hoodie.
Witnesses reported hearing a noise in the woman’s apartment before she fell, according to the sources.
Police sources said there was a history of domestic violence at the woman’s address.
It is unclear how high the woman and baby were before they plunged to the ground.
