Texas sues OpenAI and Sam Altman over product safety

Attorney General of Texas Ken Paxton launched a lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO on Friday Sam Altmanalleging they misled consumers about the security of the company’s artificial intelligence chatbot and failed to protect users from harm.

The trial is the latest example of a growing state legal offensive against the creator of ChatGPT, as the federal government has largely maintained a hands-off approach to regulating AI.

“With rapid advances in AI technology, OpenAI has a responsibility to protect users and warn them of the many dangers of its platform,” said Paxton in a statement. “I will fight to protect Texans from the harm of AI and ensure that powerful tech companies are not above the law.”

The lawsuit, which was filed in Texas state court, alleges that OpenAI’s business practices violated the state’s consumer protection and children’s online safety laws. This echoes set of pursuits filed by bipartisan attorneys general from eight states last week, alleging that OpenAI violated their respective state laws.
