It turns out that the creative team behind the Apple TV Slow horses knew Exactly how fans were likely to react to the shock ending of the sixth season finale, and had another ending in the tank, just in case.
It is by Varietywho had an interview Friday with Adam Randall, director of “Judgment Day,” the recent series finale. Which confirmed that while the ending we got in the episode – in which Jack Lowden’s River Cartwright has his dreams of romantic bliss with his nearly murdered love interrupted by the old “Pick up a poisoned crowbar left on your kitchen counter” routine – is largely canonical to author Mick Herron. Slough House the books, the team had filmed a much happier one. (Presumably in case the series was not renewed by Apple, which it did for two more seasons, in July and then September.)
What I can say is that we had two endings (for season 6), and one of them was happy, and it was a very nice ending. If this had been the end of the series, it would have just been a magical ending to River’s journey. It was almost like Spielberg-ian, the happy version. And we played with that for a while, but we knew from the book and the next story to be told in Season 7 that we needed the other version. It’s hard because it’s such a dark season and there’s so much death and tragedy to end in such a dark way. I was just like, I hope we don’t lose everyone, I really do.
Randall also addressed the spy elephant in the room, that being the rumors that Lowden is in the running to play James Bond, fueling concerns that River’s fate in the finale would be a cop-out for the series in case he gets the big job. (In a Season 7 teaser released with the finale episode, Gary Oldman’s character joked about receiving a message from Lowdon from “the beyond,” though the fact that the actor was previously photographed on the set of the show’s eighth season short-circuited many of those concerns.) “I really only know what everyone knows,” Randall asserted of Lowden’s Bond chances. “I mean, he’d be great and I think he’s in the running, but I don’t really know, and he can’t say anything.”
