Quentin Tarantino surprised the crowd with a Q&A and screening of his 10-time Oscar-nominated film. Once upon a time in Hollywood Friday night at the AFI Fest in Los Angeles, screening the first 17 minutes of its sequel The other misadventures of Cliff Booth.
This is the first public viewing of the film, a sequel to Hollywood which Tarantino wrote and directed by David Fincher. Brad Pitt revisits his Oscar-winning role as Booth, stuntman and sidekick to Leonardo DiCaprio’s Rick Dalton in the original 2019 film.
Netflix is preparing for Cliff Stand released in theaters on November 25 in Imax before being broadcast on streamer from December 23.
“Well, I could talk a little about The other misadventures of Cliff Boothor I could show you the first 17 minutes,” Tarantino said at the end of his special Q&A at the TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood. He was just asked about the film and how it came to be, and if he had anything else to say before the conversation ended.
He then stood up as the crowd began to realize what was going to happen.
Here is the moment:
Cliff Stand fast forward to 1977 from the timeline of the original 1969 film. The new logline: Los Angeles doesn’t need a hippie-killing stuntman like it used to. But Hollywood will always have problems, problems that can only be solved by someone with Cliff’s unique (sometimes extralegal) abilities. When he’s not making a living as a bartender or projectionist, Cliff Booth is a fixer – solving situations for Hollywood’s greats and, sometimes, not-so-greats.
The pic also stars Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Peter Weller, Matt Groove, JB Tadena, Corey Fogelmanis and Karren Karagulian.
Buzz around the film has been growing since it was announced in 2024 that Pitt and Fincher were teaming up on the project Tarantino originally wanted to direct. Fincher said earlier this week that he had to cut 60 pages from Tarantino’s script, after saying the first draft he read was 230 pages long. “It was basically two movies,” Fincher said. Empire.
The final cut of the film, Fincher said, lasts about 2 1/2 hours.
At tonight’s AFI Fest event, Tarantino also spoke about his upcoming play. Rider Popinjaywhich will premiere in London’s West End next spring. Sacha Baron Cohen will star in the director’s first play, which begins previews February 23 and opens March 18 at the Phoenix Theater.
